Ivan Cardillo

Senior Advisor

Dr. Cardillo is a China expert with a decade of professional experience as a policy advisor, legal consultant, and legal scholar. He advises Chinese, European, and Italian institutions on international affairs, trade, cultural diplomacy, and technological cooperation. He is a Senior Advisor of the think tank “Faren” for the Legal Daily of the Chinese government and a scientific expert for the “EU-China Research and Innovation Dialogue” and for the “Knowledge Network on China”. In his advising work, he develops risk management tools based on innovative use of data on investment trends, R&D, economy, and national security.

Dr. Cardillo provides legal assistance and consulting services to European, Chinese, and American law firms on issues related to investment law, contract law, tort law, finance, company law, due diligence, international judicial cooperation, anti-laundering law, legal risk, compliance, due diligence, mediation, litigations, translations, FDI. He frequently serves as an expert witness on Chinese law and government policy issues. He is also hired to manage Chinese clients and deal with cultural biases. He is a certified arbitrator and mediator by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

As a legal scholar, he lectured and gave presentations to more than 4000 students in ten countries. He holds positions at the China University of Political Science and Law, as Foreign Expert appointed by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology for the “Rule of Law for the International Economy within the Silk Road” project, at the University of Trento, and at the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. He teaches courses on Chinese Law, International Comparative Economic Law, Chinese and Western Comparative Legal Culture, Ethics of Legal Profession, and Comparative Law. He is the founder and director of the Institute for Chinese Law.

Dr. Cardillo is fluent in Italian, English, French, and Chinese. In 2019 he was awarded the “Xu Guangqi” award by the Italian government - Embassy of Italy in Beijing, and in 2017 the “Good Young Professor Award” by the Chinese Communist Party - League of Young Communists. In 2019 he was the Italian speaker and delegate to the “China Forum on International Legal Cooperation, Deepening International Legal Cooperation Making Joint Contributions to Belt and Road Initiative,” organized by the China Law Society, with opening remarks from Xi Jinping.

Dr. Cardillo holds a Ph.D. in Comparative and European Legal Studies from the University of Trento. He was one of the 50 best graduate students of the year in Italy, and he was awarded the “Trentino forum for peace” award.
